For the last several years, I have been in contact with James Burk, the Classen High School band director during the late '50s and early '60s. In the Spring of 2010, he called me and said he had found reel to reel audio tapes of concerts from 1959 and 1960. He wanted to get them transferred to CD but the people who normally did his other types of transfers didn't have a reel to reel recorder. So I had him send the tapes to me. I bought a used reel to reel recorder and downloaded the tapes to my computer. The audio was not real great. The biggest problem was the sound level. It was set too high on the right track and too low, in some cases, way too low on the left track. There were also various noise problems that had to be dealt with. I used audio editing software to try to make the concerts listenable. In 3 cases, I had to remove the left track and replace it with a copy of the right track. I think they all came out pretty well but you can be the judge.
There are 5 concerts. 2 each from the Springs of 1959 and 1960. There is also a Christmas concert from December 1959. What was very fortunate was that someone (Mr. Burk or Mr. Keller) had put original printed programs in with all the concerts except the Christmas concert.
Below is a list of the concerts. Click on the date and you can see the original Spring concert programs. With Mr. Burk's help, I put together a program for the Christmas concert.
If you are interested in having a copy of any of the concerts, EMAIL me with your request and I will send you the CDs.
